Maureen Melonis is currently a researcher, senior faculty instructor and assistive technology specialist in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Colorado Denver. She serves as an assistive technology consultant to the Colorado Department of Education, Exceptional Student Leadership Unit. She earned her master’s degree from Arizona State University as a speech-language pathologist, and worked in private practice, public schools, and multi-site preschool networks before joining the University in 1998. She has developed numerous training curriculums around assistive technology teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and has participated in several AT related research studies. Her interests in education have focused on teaming and leadership, early childhood and assistive technology, adult learning strategies and curriculum development. Her technology development and application research has focused on language development and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) as well as early childhood. As the education coordinator she coordinated an annual six-state regional conference on assistive technology for seven years, as well as coordinating interstate education initiatives around AT. She has presented at state, national, and international conferences on assistive technology and has published numerous resources in the field. Ms. Melonis has been honored with awards from the Colorado Department of Education, the Arapahoe County Early Childhood Council, the Metro Speech Language Pathology Network, JFK Partners, the United Cerebral Palsy Association and the Federation of the Council for Exceptional Children. In 2004, she was awarded the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton award for adults who have given distinguished service in working with young people through the Boy Scouts of America.
